Box bending is a common press brake operation, but it does require forethought with respect to your choice of press brake and tooling. WILA has a range of tooling to help you get the most out of your box bending operations.
If you plan to do deep-box bending, it’s important to choose a machine with ample open height. When you are forming a box, the final part is going to be in the press brake at a 45-degree angle when making the third and fourth bends. Therefore, you must plan for the fact that the sides of the boxes have to be able to swing up toward the press brake without hitting it - or any clamping system that may be installed.
Consider the following factors when choosing press brake tooling for deep-box bending:
WILA has a range of tooling profiles and heights for any box bending operation.
When machine open height is not an issue, 200 mm tall New Standard or 8" tall American Style punches offer the most versatility and are best suited for deep-box bending.
Gooseneck punches offer additional versatility and provide a relief area at the back of the punch for return flanges or anything else that might hit the punch.
If you need additional height beyond what your current tooling provides, consider using WILA's extenders. Available in configurations between 100 mm (3.937”) and 200 mm (7.874”).
That depends on the amount of springback that occurs and the dimensions of your Top Tool Holder. Use offline bend simulation software or contact WILA.
For an accurate calculation, you will want to consider both the springback and the width of your Tool Holder. Use offline bend simulation software or contact WILA.

WILA offers tool extenders of different heights. Check out our tool extenders in the web shop. Make sure that the open height and stroke of your press brake are suitable for the combined height of tools and extenders. Use offline bend simulation software or contact WILA for determining the required height.
